Sunday January 18

This is Ohio State Reformatory, which is no longer used as a prison but has been taken over by a historical society and they give tours. I think the architecture is neat, very gothic and the woodwork inside is gorgeous. It is the highest free standing cell range (5 or 6 tiers of cells high) Originally they did use it as a "reformatory". The grounds around it are park like and families were encouraged to come visit and have picnics etc with their inmate family members. At that time, inmates were taught trades like carpentry so that when they re-entered society they could be productive. This was also a working farm, worked by the inmates, and fed all Ohio prisons, back in the day. It has been used in several films, most extensively in Shawshank Redemption. To a lesser degree in Tango & Cash, Harry and Walter Go To New York, Lock Up, Air Force One. They also claim that it is haunted and a couple of those shows on TV that go trying to prove hauntings have been there, but I don't believe they found any proof. Needless to say, I did not get these pictures today....look at those lovely blue skies. So, in lieu of more snow pictures, I am trying for something you might find interesting.

Way cool photo's and very interesting history to it, the aerial shot looks like it could be out of a Harry Potter movie, i love the structure!

That's funny, we drove by it this past summer, but didn't visit. Hubby mentioned about the Shaw Shank Redemption being filmed there. We were actually going to eat at Brant's Bistro but they were closed due to having scheduled a wedding party. Bummer! We rode the merry go round instead. Ha! We were on our way to the balloon festival when we went through. We live in Hocking County and just happened to run across your blog:)

My grandfather was a person there for being guilty after the fact of a crime. It was not an easy place.
